“ROCKALL. MALIN. HEBRIDES. BAILEY”
‘NORTH 5 TO 7 INCREASING GALE 8, BACKING NORTH WEST LATER. SEA STATE ROUGH OR VERY ROUGH MAINLY MODERATE LATER. RAIN OR SHOWERS.VISIBILITY GOOD OCCASIONALLY POOR.’

Creating garment designs with the shipping forecast and the sound of the wind.

Created from data by plotting the Hebridean wind speed and direction with a scale-based formula created by @diggorybrown and textile designs by @orlastevens created in response to the audio recording(s) of the wind, captured in Ness on the Isle of Lewis during 10 – 12 September 2019.

As the shipping forecast data is plotted the pattern cutter’s mind begins to see the shape of a garment. The finished ‘plot line’ is mirrored, repeated, cut out to scale and folded to form a zero-waste garment design.

As the artist and textile designer absorbs the multi–sensory experience of a Hebridean landscape within a September gale; colours, textures and sounds begin to be visualised.

As the months progress these two interpretations are combined through collaboration.
